New report on women in prison launching next week
A new report on the women's incarceration crisis will be launched in Canberra next week.
A new report shedding light on how women are treated in the criminal justice system and what needs to change will be launched in Canberra next week.
The report, Doing time for men’s crimes, is based on the lived experience of women who have been incarcerated in Australia, and the various government and societal failings that contributed and led up to this, along with what needs to change.
I helped with the report and if any readers based in Canberra would like to attend the launch, all the info is over here.
I’ve included a message by The Justice Map co-founder and report lead Melanie Wilde below.
We’re thrilled to invite you to the launch of Doing Time for Men’s Crimes: How Male Violence is Driving Record Numbers of Women into Australian Prisons. The launch will be held on Wednesday 27th November at Parliament House, Canberra and hosted by Senator Dorinda Cox.
The Justice Map is a project led by women with lived experience of prison and the justice system. We have held yarning circles in Victorian prisons and, over the last 24 months, we have yarned with dozens of First Nations women in the ACT, who have spent time in the Alexander Maconochie Centre prison. Their voices are at the core of this report.
We’re calling for bold reforms that prioritise healing and accountability over punishment. This report reveals how male violence and systemic failures are fueling the rise of women’s imprisonment in Australia.
Join us for a powerful discussion featuring First Nations women with lived experience, Members of Parliament, and leading advocates, including Rocket Bretherton (star of the viral podcast “Bird’s Eye View”) and well-recognised Indigenous justice advocate Naomi Murphy.
Date: Wednesday, 27 November
Time: 9:30–10:30am AEDT (arrive by 9:00am at the Marble foyer, inside the Parliament House public entrance, for sign-in)
Location: Senate Committee Room, 2S2 Australian Parliament House

Let’s shape a better future for women impacted by Australia’s justice system.
We hope to see you there.
Warm regards,
Melanie Wilde
